Aging has some real issues: living in a culture that not only denigrates old age but actively despises it, the lack of civility that makes it hard to move fast enough to avoid being in the way, the high cost of medicine, the one-size-fits-all medical treatment, etc. This book is of no use that I can see. The author's approach is the same kind of generic advice you can find everywhere. If you are annoyed by being told that there are 8 steps to grief or 5 steps to acceptance or to be sure to bring a casserole to a grieving friend, this is not the book for you. Most of the examples seem to be of people who will benefit by being told to take a soothing bubble bath or go hug a cactus or take a rafting trip with "the girls". Nobody seems to be cutting up their pills to save money or taking time to go deeply into "aloneness". It so trivializes aging...just one more pop psychology book to add to the pile of "self-help" books that do not help. Aging is fierce, terrifying, mysterious and very human. Pick up The Bible, the Upanishads, the Torah, the Buddhist sutras, the Odyssey and you will find the same questions being asked about Life, Old Age and Death and it's re-assuring to realize these perennial questions are part of being human. Instead of continuing to "serve", women might think about why? serve your parents, your boyfriend, your husband, your children, your parents (again) and then die " Is that life? is it MY life? why do feel I have to serve? Is it real or just conditioning? Am is afraid of being called 'selfish'? why am I doing this" Old age is a time when you have the time to contemplate these questions and to find friendship and connection with all that has come before you and all that you are. Don't waste it reading this kind of trivial junk and never asking the deeper questions about what it is to be truly human. There is only this one life as this particular "person"; it's a great joy to discover what you are!

This book is not promising perfection, but rather engagement in a process that will make us happier, says the author. And it delivers on that promise. She goes on to say that as our bodies age, our souls can expand. It’s a beautifully written and realistic book that outlines becoming an older woman. We follow her journey and other women of a similar age, but with different circumstances through their life journey.It’s hard to classify. It’s a memoir, it’s a cultural statement, and it’s inspiring and full of hope. At times it reads like your favorite minister at their pulpit. Other times it reads like a proud grandma and then it becomes a culture opinion and self-help piece. All of it flows seamlessly and is beautifully written and brought me to tears a handful of times.As I continue my journey rowing north, I will continue to refer to the book and have already passed it on to my friends.

I adore Mary Pipher & expected her book on "navigating life's currents & flourishing as we age" to be my new favorite "Must read!" recommendation. My enthusiasm wilted as it dawned that she often sounds like part of my born-in-1910 mother's generation than four years my senior who graduated from high school at the dawn of the conscious-raising '60s, grew up solidly in the Therapeutic Age. Where I was expecting book relevant to every part of our nation, WOMEN ROWING NORTH seems to largely (not exclusively - one is a pleasant acquaintance of mine who lives in Phila) feature examples & anecdotes from what seem to be solidly middle class, heartland women - - makes sense, since that is where she practices, but limits its effectiveness, at least to this reader. Strikes me that a more apt title would be "White Midwestern Well-Educated Upperish-Middle Class WOMEN ROWING NORTH."

I started this book with limited expectations and found that I needed to underline quotes every few pages. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. From facing retirement to surviving the death of a partner, the author of Reviving Ophelia shows us that while every stage of life is hard, there are rewards there too; I've got the other women in my Parkinson's group reading it. (Now if only I could get my husband to read it!)

For a book aimed at persons in their advanced years, why is it printed in a small font? I’m going to have to use a magnifying glass which slows me down. The index is in an even smaller font. If you are buying this as a gift, consider the Large Print format or audio.

I'm on the downward side of my 60's - heading straight for my '70's. Luckily, I've had family and friends who have hit the milestone ages before I have and I can see how they've dealt with aging. Of course, hitting 70 ain't like hitting 50, so I've seen different reactions from those who've gone before me. I have also just finished reading Mary Pipher's new book, "Women Rowing North: Navigating Life's Currents and Flourishing as We Age". (That's such a long title that I could almost feel myself aging as I wrote it!) Pipher is the author of "Reviving Ophelia", which is about the problems and - I presume - joys of both being and raising a teenage girl. I didn't read it because I had sons, but I am growing older so I did pick up her latest book.Mary Pipher's book is chock-full of good advise on hitting your old age. She does talk about "Young Old" and "Old Old"; those different sub-catagories of aging. Seventy seems to be the start of "Old-Old", but she manages to make it seem almost desirable as she writes about women who've both cast off and taken on responsibilities they wouldn't have done 20 years earlier. Life is easier as we slow down to smell the flowers and enjoy our friendships and family relations. She gives us examples of women who've found contentment and purpose as they've aged, as they take care of grandchildren and sick husbands, She also tells of women who've found the same contentment as they've shed these responsibilities and lived basically solo lives.It's an interesting book that gave me a few ideas I hadn't originally thought about as the Big 70 - and "Old Old Age" - is fast approaching.

My family has a history of cardiac diseases. So when I came across with this book I never hesitated to grab it. I thought EKG/ECG interpretation is difficult to learn, especially for me who has no background in medical fields. But this book made it easy for me to understand it. The book is packed with information on how to read EKG/ECG result. It includes also the cardiac diseases accompanied by the abnormal EKG/ECG result. This is a very helpful guide to everyone who has concerns in their cardiac health and also to those who are in the medical field. I highly recommend this.

This book is self-published by the author, and has no editor listed. I have already found several mistakes in the first 10 pages, and I am leary to trust any of the information (example: "place the electrolytes" - instead of electrodes). I WOULD NOT BUY unless you are the type of learner who likes to double check every single fact you read. I'm sure the author means well, but do yourself a favor if you are trying to learn EKG and find a reputable source of info. I will definitely be checking publishing and editing information for my future purchases.FYI- I am a DNP studying for my ACLS.

Very good basic information for reviewing or for beginners BUT there are so many written errors that I would advise beginners to stay away from it because some of the terminology is misspelled and can cause confusion if you do not know the correct term. Obviously if you are experienced you pick it up and realize there's a typo, etc. I would strongly recommend to the writer to correct all the mistakes and then offer it because it does have good information.

This book really helped me understand how EKGs work and explained several of the details that goes into interpreting the particular waves. This book will make you familiarize with the EKG concepts. Electrocardiography (ECG/ EKG) has a core function of measuring the conduction system of the heart. This is a good guide and can be very easy to learn. So I highly recommend this study guide for all nursing students and nurses.

Though I never went to medical school I was always curios about health and medicals topics like artificial respiration, taking the x-ray and ECG, checking for diabetes, blood pressure , heart rate , etc and these are all based on my interest. Finally I found a book with detailed explanation on ECG and other related topics of the functioning and monitoring the working of cardio vascular system.

As a medical student who is currently taking a summer class in EKG, I was looking for a resource that had a better perspective outside a regular textbook. This book did exactly that and I'm glad I gave it a shot. The information was written in an easy to understand format and is perfect for beginners who are clueless or even a review for professionals in the health fields.

I took up a paramedical course but wasn't able to finish it. My interests in medical technology is still high. I want to read and learn more about everything in medical technology. I got interested with this book and the content was able to satisfy me. There are a lot of useful and relevant information here in this book. I like how it was presented with pictures. Now I have lots of information handy.

It contained a lot of illustrations and charts which really made it easy for students to follow and understand. The guide was well-written and the information was a good compilation and it had a lot of scientific knowledge and explanations. I'm impressed because this was one of the few detailed guides I have seen on this topic because of the illustrations it proved to be helpful for learning and reviewing for nursing students and physicians.

Years ago I went on a holiday to Morocco. This book is very old and was meant as one of the first travelbooks for the country but it was a joy to recognise the things I had seen while visiting. It has a very pleasant style of writing and if you are going to Morocco I would certainly recommend reading it. But also for the armchair traveller a very good and cheap read.

I'm not only a fan of Wharton's fiction, I think it's important. I had a story to write on Morocco, so I downloaded this and Samuel Levy Bensusan's 'Morocco' to see how much the experience of traveling the country had changed in the century since they wrote their books. They both write about northern Morocco, north of the Atlas, which has changed quite a bit, but southern Morocco -- south of the Atlas -- one encounters the same experiences and incidents Wharton and Bensusan had in the early 1900s. Her eye for detail and insight is no less dim than in her fiction. However, her French favortism -- the idea that French colonialists were a proper civilizing influence on the barbarous natives -- is hard to stomach after a while. Still, worth a read before visiting the country.

Beautifully written...she can really conjure up pictures with her words. (A good thing, because the pictures in the book are not included in the Kindle version) It is very interesting to read this book depicting her travels in Morocco around WWI in the light of current Middle East politics. Do our statesmen ever read books like this?

Edith Wharton's vivid description of her journeying through Morocco in 1917 is better than any contemporary guide book. Full of amusing and detailed descriptions of her drive from Tangiers down through Fez and Rabat to Marrakesh, one has to remember the condition of the roads back then and the length of time taken. In addition it gives a detailed history of the country and its rich Islamic heritage. The bazaars in Fez remain today as mysterious and crowded with their tanneries, silk and rugs, chickens and donkeys as they were almost a hundred years ago.

Don’t buy this copy. It is a bootleg of the original. Printed via create space. It isn’t even the right dimensions of “standard” memoirs are. I’m sending it back. This company show be ashamed.

When I first visited Granada,I carried Washington Irving's Tales of the Alhambra and used it almost as a guide book.Should I ever go to Morocco, I would do the same with Edith Wharton's volume.Wharton has a reporter's eye coupled with the ability to translate vision into exquisite prose.IN MOROCCO weaves together history,culture,politics, and travel but moreover, links us to the world of Islam today and helps us realize that some things can never change.,

This is a bootleg book. Poor reprinting job with text crooked on the pages, no writing on the spine, and blurry text on the back cover. This is not okay and likely illegal. I'm requesting a refund.

Wharton's travelogue itself I'd rate 5 stars (I love it!) -- as good as Rebecca West's Black Lamb, Gray Falcon. But the volunteer scanning/encoding for this Kindle edition, what with omission of all the illustrations from the original edition, and some occasional errors in formatting for Kindle, leaves me disappointed: only 3 or even perhaps just 2 stars for that. All told, though, I like it, hence my 4 stars.

I eagerly anticipated this book for two reasons that don’t fit well together. First, although I do not know the Obamas, I have several friends who are close personal friends of both Michelle and Barack (this results from my attending law school while Barack was teaching, and living in Chicago for some years thereafter). Second, I am not particularly a fan of their politics, although I obviously have nothing against them personally. Thus, I think I can offer an objective view of this book—and I found it both moving and worthwhile.What comes across most in this book is Michelle Obama’s lack of self-pity combined with clarity of vision. I suspect this was a difficult book to write—she knew that whatever she wrote, somebody, and maybe a lot of people, would criticize her for it. She therefore focuses quite a bit on what might be called practical insight and empowerment, rather than on settling political scores. That’s probably a wise choice—after all, her husband’s terms as President showed that very few people were interested in political settlements or compromise.The first third of the book covers her childhood (“Becoming Me”). Contrary to the stereotype of Democrats as the party of the elite, Obama’s childhood, at least, was working class. She grew up in the lower middle class South Shore neighborhood of Chicago; her father was a boiler operator. Obama grew up in a stable household where her parents made their high expectations clear, though family life had its challenges, especially her father’s falling ill with multiple sclerosis. Still, she managed to go to Princeton, then Harvard Law, and then to work at the ultra-prestigious Chicago law firm of Sidley & Austin, where she met Barack (and where my wife worked, a few years after that time). I started law school in 1991, when Barack had just returned to Chicago from Harvard; he was much talked about even before he began teaching at the University of Chicago, because a high-powered Harvard graduate did not often choose to return to community organizing, rather than working for a white-shoe firm like Sidley. In contrast, Michelle Obama makes clear in this book she’s the organized, path-following one, who shows up on time, unlike her husband, which is probably why law firm life suited her better.These initial years with Barack form the second third of the book (“Becoming Us”); one can tell that Obama struggled with her husband’s political ambition, because being a political spouse always imposes tremendous costs on the one not running for office (and she is explicit she has no interest in herself running for office). In fact, she talks at some length about the couples’ counseling they had to go through as a result, though it seems to have worked out for them! All of this is quite interesting, and much more readable than the massive biography of Barack that David Garrow wrote two years ago, “Rising Star,” which defeated my repeated attempts to read it, by having far too much irrelevant detail. Michelle Obama does not make that mistake here, for which the reader, or at least this reader, is grateful.Obama closes the last third of the book with what was probably the hardest part to write, “Becoming More.” She talks about the stress, but also the opportunity to offer her vision, that being in the spotlight meant, and she criticizes Barack’s successor in office in no uncertain, but in measured, terms. At the end, she remains optimistic, but one gets a little of the feeling that she isn’t certain her optimism is warranted.I have a lot of sympathy for Michelle Obama. Every person in power, whether that power is direct or indirect, is always ultimately frustrated, but it must gall her to see the contrast between her husband and Donald Trump. I think that she picked the right path of not making that the focus of the book, though. She’s a grounded pragmatist at heart, or at least so it seems from this book. And we could all use a lot more grounded pragmatism, so her contribution to public discourse with this book is (unlike many political autobiographies) both illuminating and valuable.

I believe I always loved Michelle Obama. Her grace and dignity always seemed to come as a gift from above. Her spirit is so incredibly deep and strong. The stories from her childhood, her brother, her neighborhood, her family, inform us in a brilliant voice about what it was like in the place and time she grew up.Michelle Obama has the empathy and the depth of character so missing in her media portrayal. I always felt worried that we were suffocating her. But there is a Michelle Obama who is bigger than the words on a page. She knows our pains, and she understands our lives. And we know her in this book. In this most private book, we know her in a way we could not have otherwise. Interesting that nothing here surprises me, it only affirms what I felt like I know: Michelle Obama is a person like us. She worked and suffered and overcame.Her storytelling skills are exquisite. It left me a little breathless to hear her voice, unfettered and real.I love the photographs.

Michelle Obama is my voice, a voice that may never be heard with thoughts, feelings and experiences similar to mine yet they don’t matter until now. Thank you Mrs. Obama! For being the voice of this African American woman❤️ Everyone should buy this book!

Except for the early chapters, this is one of the best memoirs by a political leader that I have read.When it comes to first ladies, I’ve liked and respected them all. My favorite was Barbara Bush, wife of George H. W. Bush. Michele Obama, though, ranks quite highly.This work by Michelle is a definite eye opener into her life. The opening chapters show her youth, in which she grudgingly accompanied her father during his rounds in his groundwork fixing the fixable issues for the Democratic Party constituents of his boss, an alderman in Chicago.Honestly, this early part of her life could have been trimmed. Still, my understanding of the plight of black Americans in history did benefit.Despite the media’s fixation on everything Donald Trump, Michelle only mentions his name on nine separate pages. And, aside from her fear for her girls, she states nothing extraordinary about the man. I suppose it is significant that the only excerpts we have been provided by the news media is her statement that she will never forgive him for endangering her family in regards to the birther movement. In other words, for people looking for dirt, gossip, or controversy, this memoir is likely to go down as one of the least noted autobiographies in modern times.I wish, though, that the First Lady had mentioned more of Malala Yousafzai and her courageous fight for women and girls and education.BLUSH FACTOR: No worries here. A window into her life so far, Michelle Obama gives us endearing, insightful, honest memories. From growing up in a working class household in Chicago, to leaving the White House residence, her story is unique and thought provoking. If you admire and respect the Obamas, you will like this book.

I read a lot of negative reviews, but I don’t understand why. I enjoyed reading her story from her perspective. Some parts made me sad; however, I’ll always view Michelle Obama as a role model.

The premise of this book is pretty unique in my reading. The book is written, as the title will clue you in, as if it's the memoir of a female natural historian of what is essentially alternate Victorian England. It's a lot to take in but it works surprisingly well.Our memoirist, the eponymous Lady Trent, starts off the "memoir" introducing the reader to herself as a child and relating her early and lasting fascination with dragons and the research of dragons. From the asides and tone of the book you learn that Lady Trent is now an older lady who has become famous during her lifetime for her discoveries, which let her get away with a lot of things that a less-famous and younger lady would not be able to pull off.I did like that there were some original ideas in this iteration of dragons - it's always great to see something new brought to the table. With the scientific approach to dragons there was an emphasis on some things that usually get glossed over, like the physics of flight and commercial uses of things relating to dragons (trying to avoid getting adding spoilers). I also liked the quirk of dragon remains being extremely difficult to preserve and this presenting a real challenge for science.This book really appeals to a lot of things I like - fantasy, dragons, Victorian/Regency mannerisms (fantasy of manners), and a fun adventure. Although there are definitely conflicts and some violence in the book, because of it being told at a bit of a remove because of the "memoir" format it never feels very immediate, which for me worked well with the Victorian/Regency style feel.While this is not my new favorite book it was definitely an enjoyable read. This was the first book in a series and I'd be more than happy to read the sequels!

I love this book so whole-heartily that I came to buy it's sequel (A Tropic of Serpents) and stopped by to leave a review because I just want more people to enjoy the wonder of this book. First off let me tell you, Lady Trent is one of the greatest narrators I have ever had the pleasure of spending an entire book with. I love her. She is a well-developed and lovable woman with real fears, concerns, and desires. She understands her limitations, she just refuses to let them hold her back.Now on to the real review.First the cons:Honestly, I can't really think of anything I didn't like about this book. It was just that good, I literally loved every part of it.Now the pros:1. Lady Trent is a realistic strong woman, she doesn't pretend to be a man. She knows that she isn't. She is a woman and she has a woman's concerns and limitations. She doesn't put down other woman because they haven't achieved what she has and although she does find her friend Manda Lewis's obsession with sensation novels a bit frivolous, I never did get the feeling she actually hated Manda or really held it against her.2. This book is about dragons. Dragons man. And they don't disappoint, there are some amazing illustrations in the book of these majestic and awe-inspiring creatures supposedly drawn by Lady Trent herself. They really enhance the mood and help you to understand Lady Trent's desperate obsession with figuring out how they work.3. Jacob, Lady Trent's husband, is a humorous and likable secondary character. I loved him and well I won't say much more. You'll just have to read it.4. Dragma and Lady Trent's relationship is hilarious and develops quite nicely over the course of the book.5. The book is an easy and quick read and has a steady pace. It will suck you in and it will be hard to put down. But if you must you can and will you pick it up again it will be easy to get back into the world and the conflict of the story.Buy this book, you won't regret it! It will be one of the best purchase you will make this year. I promise!

Written in the style of a memoir, the voice of Lady Trent is alternately proper and full of mischief. Although on paper they may sound similar, this has a very different feel from Naomi Novik's Temeraire series as the first-person voice is distictly feminine."A Natural History of Dragons" chronicles Lady Trent's early years and her first expedition, leaving plenty of space for future volumes. Thankfully, the story has a satisfactory conclusion rather than leaving the readers with a cliff-hanger as some first-of-a-series books do. The characterizations of various characters other than Lady Trent (and perhaps her husband) are somewhat two-dimensional and the I felt the pacing of the plot was a bit rushed at the end compared to the rest of the book, but the saucy narrative makes the book hard to put down.As an added bonus, the hardcover copy of the book is absolutely beautiful. The deckled edges combined with text printed in chestnut brown ink immediately evokes the feeling of holding a handwritten journal. Also, Todd Lockwood is amazing as usual and the inner illustrations of various draconic species are stunning and lovingly detailed in an elegant sepia ink. The fanastic cover needs no words. This is definitely a book to purchase as a hard copy.
