About the Author
Jonathan R. White is professor of interdisciplinary studies in the Frederik Meijer Honors College of Grand Valley State University. The founding director of GVSU's School of Criminal Justice, Dr. White was promoted to dean of Social Sciences and served there until he was summoned to the Bureau of Justice Assistance to direct the State and Local Anti-Terrorism Training (SLATT) program after the attacks of 9-11. He conducted counterterrorism training for law enforcement and military forces in Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, and throughout the United States. A recognized expert on religious terrorism, Dr. White currently teaches classes on national security, intelligence analysis, and counterterrorism in the Meijer Honors College.

This is the exact textbook my son needed for college. I decided to try here since it's significantly higher price on campus and he was low on funds. Looking through the text, I see that there is some really informative chapters that he needs to know for his Homeland Security course. ( I've already taken a different course than the one he is taking, but the info seems to follow the same course outline I took.) This book covers the history of terrorism as well as modern day theories and approaches. It also covers not only international terrorism, but domestic terrorism too, something a lot of people don't realize actually exists.. The book discusses how politics, the media, religion, and civil rights all tie into certain aspects of terrorism along with management, origins, policies, and some groups that may be considered some of our nations biggest threats. It explains about WMD's, financing, how terrorism has changed over the years, etc. There are a few dull parts, but overall, for a first time student taking this there is some really helpful information. I like that it goes over the key points of each chapter and also gives suggested reading ideas and web resources.The book also arrived in excellent condition for being a used book. There were no scratches, no markings, no rips, etc. We will definitely be looking at buying more textbooks in the upcoming semesters.
The book is fine. But be careful buying if you need this for a class. It did not come with the required code to access "exam" and other quiz materials used by instructors. And a replacement book which the seller promised would have the required code did not. I gave up, as the class had already started, and I was getting behind. I had to buy the access code separately through the book's publisher's website. So buying the book "new" from someone other than the publisher was not at all helpful because I ended up having to pay for a code to use this as a school course book.
This is a decent book for an introduction into defining terrorism, understanding its history in the world, and providing explanations on the methods use to thwart terrorism. I would recommend this book to anyone desiring a real understanding of terrorism. In this day and time, having an unbiased opinion on the topic of terrorism is truly important; this book will help you define your opinion.
I liked this book for the fact that it gave historical background to the history of terrorism and the reasons people were deemed terrorists. I gave it 4 and not 5 stars because the index in the back didn't help me very much when I tried to look up specific terms that I needed to know. Also the definitions of terms that are given in the sidebar don't match up with the terms usage in the text, so that was hard to follow. Homeland Security wasn't discussed enough for my liking; rather Departments were defined in the last few chapters. I got this book at a good price and it helped me greatly in Grad school.
I have been needing this book for my school. Thankfully Amazon was able to rent this book and save me a lot more money on here than renting it on campus. The book is a great read and easy to understand. Got an A in the course because of this book. Very informative and if you need to get this book for school, rent it through here.

I really liked this book it has an abundance of good information about terrorism. Historically reflects the struggles of many countries and many tragedies territories have had to face because of oppression and politics. I used this book in my upper division university class this passed semester.
