A great writer but only a so-so book. I couldn't stick with it to the end. The well written story is full of interesting characters primarily in Vienna, so Austrian (German) terms and expressions pepper the book. I can attest that the author obviously knows Vienna, its charater, and its many streets and buildings.The theme is a bit obscure, full of the occult, alchemy, prodigy, and gratuitous sex. The characters gradually lost some of their dimensionality which is a pity because the story is character driven. The obscurity gradually robbed my interest.
This is the sequel to City of Dark Magic. It's a great book, but not quite the amazing book that Dark Magic was. If you didn't read Dark Magic, you wouldn't know this book had anything lacking. This book had interesting history, unusual (but true) science, travel to interesting places and, of course, magic. I can't wait for the next book!
I just loved both this book and I am hopeful that there will be more in the future. It has everything anyone could ever want.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It went places that I did not expect after reading the first book. God job of blending current science with alchemy.
This is the second book. I enjoyed it as much as the first.
This is the second in an amusing , what I hope to be, a series of supernatural mysteries.It is also like a travelogue in that its stories unfold in many beautiful European cities such as Prague, Vienna and Venice.Also, you do not have to have read the first book in the series, City of Dark Magic, in order to enjoy this one. An all around treat
