When Faith Fails has gripped my heart. I am a mother of a son I raised to know and love Jesus, and he deeply, passionately, authentically did just that. He owned his faith well through his college years, but in his mid 20’s struggled with doubt and now professes to be an atheist. Of course I don’t believe that label describes or defines his identity. God has been so faithful to encourage me too, yet sometimes I ache with doubts of my own. This by far is one of the most difficult journeys for any parent. Which is why I’m so grateful for the hope and wisdom Dominic brilliantly delivers in this book. I urge every parent to read this book and be prepared for when (not if) your child says: “I’m having doubtsâ€. As Dominic says, “our cultural moment ferments the deconstruction of faithâ€. Yet “doubt isn’t the end of the storyâ€. In fact, if you are a parent or grandparent; ask your kids, no matter their age; engage in this topic before doubt engages them. If you hear your son or daughter say these words, take them seriously. Call in sick at work, cancel your appointments, and sit down and listen. Go on long walks; share your doubts with them too, pouring your own heart out in honesty before God. Read this excellent book, you will be encouraged and equipped, then share it with them.This book strengthened my hope, reminding me “doubt can lead into a penetrating quest for truth.†“it’s the contrast of being far from home that makes coming home so meaningful.†And “doubt could be our soul’s way of screaming out for healing, redemption and renewal.†Thank you Dominic.
I started reading When Faith Fails: Finding God in the Shadow of Doubt with the goal of equipping myself to help others. Neatly divided into three sections—and beautifully written—this book was sure to teach me about the nature and origin of doubt. In addition, it would explain how to transform periods of doubt into opportunities for growth. That would have been enough, but I got more than that out of this book. When Faith Fails doesn’t simply offer a neat directive for detoxing from doubt. No. What I discovered is that with each page I read, doubt took on a different shape. It looked more and more like a tool I could use for mining faith. With each page I read, I found I had new questions to ponder and explore. And, with that, I found myself going deeper into the pool of faith. As Dominic Done succinctly puts it, “Doubt can make your friendship with God more vulnerable, gritty, and alive. In fact, your doubt may be the very instrument that refines your faith so that only Jesus remains.†He’s right. I’m already looking forward to my second read of this powerful book.
This review will be short because I would rather have you spend your time reading this book than reviews about this book. This is a book with great depth that is also very fluid. It reads "fast." So you don't need to slog through the deep topics but rather slow down to make sure you consider what has been written. Dom has written the best chapter I've read concerning "suffering" from a Christian perspective. He doesn't gloss over the hard topics but hits them head on. He doesn't pretend that he knows all the answers. He encourages people to think not check their intellect at the door. This book is perfect for the Christians who have walked away from the Church" or Christian life because Dom addresses the hard subjects so adroitly. The "answers" he provides come not only from his research but from his experiences. I actually read the last couple of chapters slowly because I didn't want the book to end. I really wanted to see what he was going to address next. I can't wait for his next book. And to leave you with something fun. I'm going to paraphrase a sentence from the book..."each of these issues opens a huge can of worms and there is no way to adequately sift through all of them...so in celebration of liberated worms let me allow them to roam freely. " So my brain has spent the last 3 weeks pondering the movements of liberated worms. Love it! Review was written by Susan not Chris who is my son and a far better writer. If you purchase this book I can promise you that you will read it more than once.
When Faith Fails shines a bright light on the topic of doubt and how it should not be feared but embraced for what it is. Done points out that when believers express their doubts they may be afraid of being shunned by the church having those doubts. Instead of cloistering their doubts, individuals should examine their doubts, talk with others about them, use the area of doubt as an opportunity to research topics related to the doubt and ultimately use the doubt as a means of growth in their spiritual life. The book gives permission to have doubts and provides resources for letting go of the doubt so that freedom can be found.
Sitting down with this book is like sitting down with a wise companion who has the ability to give words to your experiences with doubt that you've been unable to do on your own. The author writes not as the one with all the answers but as the one who’s wrestled with all the questions himself. He is solid in the most gentle way, never scolding or settling for simple answers. Instead, Dominic shows how our doubts and questions are not a closed door to our faith but rather the way through to a deeper, richer one. If you’re longing for more than scripted answers but a safe place where you can honestly wrestle your questions about faith, then this book is for you. As a side bonus, it’s chock-full of interesting stories and nuggets of information about everything from the emotional impact of eclipses to the jungle and people of Vanuatu. I absolutely loved this book!!
