I just adore Lora Leigh's Breeds and look forward to each new story being released. I don't even mind that there's a repetitive formula to the books ... angst, male resisting the mate idea, danger, passion, chase the bad guys, a few subplots and stealthy secondary characters in the mix and then happily ever after. But this attempt at convoluted subterfuge was just bizarre. It made no sense - and at the end - it seemed everyone pretty much knew or suspected who all the other secret players were anyway. And the contradictions... I understand Rule Breaker being conflicted, resisting the idea of a mate because of the horror he saw with his mother. He lives his life with the idea of leaving immediately if a possible mate ever comes into his orbit - avoiding having a mate. Has clauses about not taking jobs involving women. Supposedly he doesn't know Gypsy is his mate, although there's a protectiveness and strong attraction since first being part of the team that saves her when she's 15. So for the next 9 years, he watches over her, pulls strings behind the scenes to involve Gypsy in covert activities, and actually finds a way to ensure she remains untouched sexually, saving her virginity for him. But - theoretically - she's not his mate. Huh??It was nice (as always) to catch glimpses of the other characters and get sneak peaks into their lives, although there wasn't too much of substance. Love Baby Amber, so I'm glad some of her story got resolved even thought that particular plot line was unbelievably weak.My biggest pet peeve: there's a point at which Rule is unbelievably stupid (don't want to add too much of a spoiler) and unwittingly leaves Gypsy, leaving her feeling totally humiliated. Lots of conflict, hurt ensues. It's a pivotal point in the book and the relationship. Ultimately (of course) they get past it - but Rule never actually explains the misunderstanding to Gypsy. I looked forward to him explaining how she misinterpreted the meaning behind his (undeniably stupid) actions.Fair disclosure, the book was too long. Far too many pages that didn't add value. I like steamy reads, but the sex scenes were so long and monotonous, I admit to some skimming. There's a small possibility I missed the "big explanation".Love the world; love the breeds. Will likely continue to buy any others published. But this one was a disappointment.
I have been anticipating this book for almost one year. I found the novella in Enthralled (The Devil's Due) to be confusing & less than compelling (too little character development), but it was listed as a precursor to Rule Breaker. I was chapters into Rule before I found any real connection at all. The best part of RB was finally connecting the dots & making connections with the major players in the Breeds Series. It also gave the faithful more clues to Leigh's next novel. I found Rule's character development, from confirmed mate-avoider to 'let-me -at -her' willing mate more than abrupt. Maybe I missed something in previous reads, but when/where was Rule giving off any 'I found my mate' vibes? However, the world of the Breeds was forcefully presented, with more insights into the Mating Heat phenomenon, history of the Labs' heinous crimes & the help the Breeds received from Native Americans. While I may nit-pick over character development, I devoured this book in a day. I DID enjoy it. I am looking forward to the next Breed novel. And therein lies the plight of the faithful fan. It took almost a year between Breed stories to have Rule Breaker's story published. Beside the massive cost of a hardback book, a year is a very long time to keep your audience waiting. It may well be that the blessing for Leigh in gaining a better contract will drive some of the faithful to other authors & series' offerings.April 15, 2014 ADDENDUM 2 months after my first review, I have reread Rule Breaker & have more reservations than before. I am lowering the rating to 3 stars as well. This book didn't stand the MomSear's test of 'worth a second read' content. Sorry, Ms. Leigh. I loved some of the middle period books, but the last 3 offerings have been too convoluted & obscured for good entertainment. I do not want to work for my reading entertainment. I haven't read any of Leigh's books in the interim, and I became so confused about who is whom that I ended up angry at the characters! This book must be incredibly frustrating for new readers of the Breeds - you need a print-out identifying what name the character goes by in specific time frames, how they are involved in what plot, who they are related to & how, plus a short synopsis of their offenses! After paying $12+ for this less than satisfying novel, I am now less likely to buy an e-book than I am to borrow one from the library to check it out first. I'd recommend that other would be readers exercise that option as well. How about the Breeds return to their roots & concentrate on compelling characters in riveting circumstances battling for their species survival? That would bring me back into the world of The Breeds !
I hate to give this review because i am a huge fan of this series and author. I felt the author had written herself into a corner and was trying to tie too many plot lines together. There was too much going on and it did not make sense to me. I am reading romance and want the book to mainly be about the couple. This was waaayyyyyy too disjointed. Hopefully the next in the series will be better or this will be my last. At least you find out what is going on with Jonas' daughter.......sort of but explanation was rushed and fantastical. I hope she stops with all of the hints of future plots and matches and concentrates on one story next time. Narrow it down!
