I am new to Dee Henderson's mysteries and have started the Evie Blackwell series on the second book. It was very easy to pick up the story line though I will go back and read the first book to more fully understand the background of the continuing characters. In “Threads of Suspicionâ€, Evie is part of the newly formed Missing Persons Task Force. She chooses to pursue the case of a college student who went missing without a trace in 2007. Her colleague, David, is researching the case of a missing Private Investigator who likewise vanished without a trace. While the two cases are dissimilar in time, they share a general locale which is why the two investigators are working at the same office location. As they separately pursue their cases, they bounce ideas and thoughts off one another about the others case. It is really interesting to see that differences in how investigators might choose to pursue and interpret leads. In general, the time and thought that goes into investigating cold cases was fascinating. The idea of building many scenarios that fit the existing facts of the case, no matter how diverse or outlandish, was interesting and thought-provoking. Given a certain set of facts, how many ways could one logically explain the missing person case?As the investigations continue, the cases begin to intertwine and even cross over into the personal lives of the two investigators. The resources of others are called in as the potential crimes take on even more ominous tones. In addition to the mystery, the personal lives of the investigators are progressing. Evie has commitment issues and is trying to get to the bottom of why she is afraid of marriage. David's fiancee, Maggie, has commitment issues of her own with regards to faith. The book was interesting and engrossing. I came away with even more respect for those who choose to pursue detective work, especially with regards to cold cases. It was an enlightening and enjoyable novel to read.
Looking at other reviews people tell something about the story, kinda like the back cover of a paper back. I never really feel the need to do that.Reading Dee Henderson's books is becoming part of the story. You love her characters, you hurt when they hurt, you smile when they smile and you wish you knew people like that in real life. When the story is over you look forward to the next one. Will it be about someone you met in this story? You hope so,because you don't want to let go of the people you met this time. How refreshing to read about people living in the world and having a relationship with Jesus. Reading how that relationship makes them who they are. The storyline showing their God given abilities and their humanity in the things they don't do so well.Reading Dee Henderson is always a satisfying heart building experience!
Dee Henderson has made a name for herself in Christian romantic suspense. It can be hard for others to live up to the high bar that Henderson sets. In the case of Threads of Suspicion, Book II of Evie Blackwell Cold Case Mysteries, Henderson writes well, but doesn't meet her previous standards of the O'Malley series.Lieutenant Evie Blackwell and a group of other detectives, including David Marshall, are assigned by the governor to revisit cold cases in counties across the state. Evie is trying to discover what happened to a college co-ed, Jenna, who disappeared after a concert. Her partner, David, is tasked with locating a detective who went missing some years previous.Evie and David find their cases intertwine and spend time working together. As they work, they have spiritual conversations that are realistic and very frank, yet slow the pace of the action. I kept wondering if Henderson could have planted the Biblical ideas little by little, so the story line didn't seem so disjointed.Needless to say, I had a hard time connecting to the book. Maybe I was expecting more action, which eventually came, but not enough to call this a favorite book, as I had hoped.Still, there was much good conversation to take to heart. Here are some examples."Life reveals truth.""God appreciates justice even more than we do, so it makes sense that He'd be interested in helping us find it."I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. This did not influence my opinions, for which I am solely responsible.
"I run theories, play what-ifs, see how many different stories I can create of the existing evidence. I try to simultaneously hold all of them as active possibilities as I explore for more facts."Detective Evie Blackwell is good at what she does; really good . . . . so good in fact, that she has just been appointed by the governor to serve on an elite "Missing Persons Task Force" for the state of Illinois. Working within a team of highly talented investigators, she and her partner, David Marshal, head to Chicago to work on cases that don't seem to have anything in common except geographic location, until "threads of suspicion" begin to unravel in all directions and the two top cops feel a sense of urgency to find their killer. This second novel in Dee Henderson's "Evie Blackwell Cold Case" series reads like an investigative textbook; full of swirling data, and confusing innuendos, but thankfully letting its readers tip-toe into the hearts and minds of two very focused detectives, whose personal lives hold just as many challenges as the facts of this case.
