I often found it difficult tear myself away from the narrative of Conquistador Voices. From the Spanish and indigenous peoples perspectives the full spectrum of humanities nature. Men seeking glory and riches ruthlessly doing whatever it takes to achieve status and in the name of God. And others, in the names of their Sovereign, meeting an Other in a new land and, in the name of God, finding brotherhood. The sheer physical demands that were faced and overcome by the Spanish were daunting. Matched, however, by the ferocity of the cruelty suffered by the native Americans. The magnificence of native civilization, art, and culture balanced by the violence of their ruling class and the blood soaked heart of their theologies. The reflexive judgement by modern sensibilities will come but these accounts literally, "in their own words", elicits an empathy that may surprise. It felt sometimes that so much could have been avoided easily but that a mindless preference for cruelty was maliciously blinding men from themselves in the Other. Very sad. Very fascinating.
Great work here by the author. Direct translations of the Spanish explorers, the native people and excellent commentary and explanation. Could not put it down. So much more to New World discovery than generally taught in school.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It held my interest and was a good length.I found it sad that people would travel to unknown places seeking fortune, causing total chaos into established cultures. But, these were the times mankind was in. To subjugate or to be subjugated....and the aborigines were no different. When in modern times when certain cultures are demonized for slavery practices, the accusers seem to leave out a history of the America’s before being discovered by Europeans. I’ve also learned reading books like this how the environment was manipulated by Native Americans when we are supposed to believe how they left the environment alone and pristine.Life must have been grueling for Europeans to risk their lives for a vague promise of wealth and fortune. Many not only did not find it, but lost their lives searching for it all while causing havoc on to native populations.

Astounding history easily accessible for the lay reader of history, this book uses primary sources and describes Spanish adventures in North America that most people have not heard of or harbor vague and inaccurate notions from the fifth grade.
As with the first volume, this book conveys remarkable immediacy and authenticity through the contemporary accounts by members of the different expeditions. Even more extraordinary are the occasions when the Conquistador version of a particular event is juxtapositioned with that of the indigenous people – it gave me a real sense of the cultural gap between the two. And the story of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca added another extraordinary perspective to the overall history.
