Chapters were fairly well written but I often had trouble relating the reading to the examples and was just following along. Because of this I had some difficulty with the exercises at the end of each chapter. It wasn't too bad for most of the book, but the last few chapters I was unable to complete at all without help.
If I could I will give 0 stars to this book completely useless. Very confusing on the chapter the is not clear not very good examples and then at the end of the chapters the case to solve are completely different to what you read. I very expensive way to get frustrated.
There are missing steps for case problems and errors in this book.. be on the look out... tutorial does not prepare you for the more challenging problems.. i had a 4.0 until i took a class using this book.. ugh..

IGNORE THE 5-STAR REVIEWS--they have to be fanboys because this book is NOT user friendly (much less "visually stunning" --whaaa???). Although one of them sniffs about students rating the book poorly, he apparently didn't trouble himself to read the preface where it states explicitly that the book is directed at students.You may not be able to get around using this book if you are in a class and it is the assigned text; if so, I'm very sorry for you because you're in for a rough school term. Agree strongly with those who say it doesn't give enough support/information to be able to do most of the case problems at the end of each chapter. The page-by-page explanations of concepts are heavy on technical specifications for the syntax, but very light on clearly written and easily understandable discussion of what you're doing and why. Someone needs to explain to Cengage that tech writers don't necessarily make good text book authors, especially if they can't get outside their own heads and speak on the level of a beginning student.This book uses the technique of giving you step-by-step instructions along with the required code snippets to insert into your working tutorial document during the chapter, then slams you with vague instructions in the review and case problems at the end of the chapter. This approach makes the faulty assumption that one time through suddenly makes you an expert and now you're ready to go it alone. That isn't teaching, it's not skill building, it's setting up the student for failure and frustration. How about some smaller steps with more repetition and selected case solutions so work can be checked in real time?One other note, a fair amount of time is spent on things you later find out are not practical, not efficient, no longer in use or are not yet supported. It's mind bending, tedious and a waste of valuable time for anyone who is taking a full load and needs to parse out study time carefully.NOT RECOMMENDED - AVOID IF AT ALL POSSIBLE
Some of the steps, although laid out well, create validating errors that you have to find yourself. The last couple of chapters dealing with saxon and java were worst than any previous issues. Not well written and not well edited at all.
Despite the deprecations of the disgruntled(students? I assume, since most of them are) in regard to the previous edition, this new edition (which is available almost in total on Google Books for free!) is a beautiful, clear, and visually stunning explication of XML. Very complete, geared toward the beginner, I highly recommend it. My interest in XML stems from working in Android Studio, and there are several complete lessons in this book that cover the whole range of XML topics. It is also very contemporary, given that this review is being written in May of 2015. Buy it, you won't be sorry.
