The art is quite nice.There are some outstanding moments - page 5 and 6 of issue one show the contrast between Clark's homelife when Lois and his son are around vs. how empty and lonely it feels now that they are traveling the galaxy. Really really poignant. Mr. Bendis's dialogue helps in those scenes, but it is the art that carries it.Some of the dialogue is very strong, though a bit out of character for Superman. There are a couple of funny Batman moments, but again, one of them is terribly out of character and not worth the laugh in the long run.The problem here, as in Mr. Bendis's Man of Steel trade, is that the plot just isn't that compelling. The villains are bland, we know the crisis will get resolved, and the solution isn't that creative. The first person to review this book did an excellent job, and I agree wholeheartedly that the depiction of the Martian Manhunter was horrifically done.
I was a big fan of rebirth Superman and action comics both Dan and peter did an excellent job of adding new elements while bringing the pre-52 Superman back. I read bendis’ work with guardians of the galaxy and x-men and I did enjoy it, but I wasn’t a huge fan of him taking over both Superman titles. The titles dropped to once a month, Superman’s underwear came back, which I didn’t care for that much. It was said that bendis was going to embrace what came before however in his limited run he took away everything rebirth had built.Superman is better then action comics and I do enjoy the art. Superman has more action then action comics does. However there are many plot holes. Bendis does play the long game but in this volume it might leave you confused because it’s not tour typically six issue story. Everything seems to still be setting up. A lot of exposition.Bendis is still slated on the title for a while, however, I hope they change it soon.
I have absolutely nothing again Brian Michael Bendis and when he came to DC from Marvel I figured it was a nice coup for Warner Brothers. I wasn’t thrilled that he was taking over BOTH Superman series since I was enjoying the work of Peter Tomasi and Dan Jurgens tremendously but given Bendis’s track record at Marvel I was hoping for good things. He’s won a handful of Eisner Awards but nothing since the early 2000’s. When I started reading his work on Superman I was hoping that it was just a slow start building up to something exciting but it seemed to never happen. This is my first experience reading Bendis and it’s possible that his style just doesn’t work for me.If you told me the plot that Bendis was going with I would think it sounded very interesting. An accident at Star Labs pushes the Earth into the Phantom Zone where the worst criminals from Krypton’s past are incarcerated. This includes the recently imprisoned Rogol Zaar and the Kryptonian mass murderer Jax-Ur. Everything sounds cool but it’s in the execution where things go all wonky. Bendis is trying SO hard to make Superman the prefect idealized hero but it just doesn’t work for me. There is an exciting fight between Superman and Jax-Ur but Bendis decided to interlace the fight with flashbacks of Superman imparting wisdom on his son. This COULD work but instead it drags down the excitement and Superman’s words just come off as schmaltz. In issue 1, J’onn J’onzz suggests that Superman take over the world and lead it into the future. Superman, as a perfect hero, declines (possibly as a subtle contrast to the Injustice Superman). It’s nice to see Bendis showing the incorruptibility of Superman but he sacrificed The Martian Manhunter in doing so. Not cool.For me, there is just something terribly off with Bendis’s writing. There is too much introspection from Superman and far too many dead zones in the plot. A story should have a balance between action and rest but I find the rest times too numerous and too dull. My complaints are aimed at Bendis’s writing in general for Superman which also includes Action Comics and comics that comics after issue 6. I just can never find myself getting invested in anything he writes.Bendis took the reins of Superman with much fanfare but I cannot imagine this is how DC saw things playing out. Superman #1 shipped 133.7k copies which is a huge increase over Superman #44 which shipped just 42.5k copies in April 2018 but the truth is any issue #1 of Superman is going to be huge. Issue 2 dropped to 77k and by January, Superman issue 7 had shipped just 50k copies for 25th overall sales for the month. Still, it’s doing better than Action Comics 1007 which shipped just 44k copies for 32nd. I’d say that Superman Comics is doing better because there actually is SOME action going on whereas Action Comics is ironically free of action. I think the sales numbers are showing exactly where fans are regarding Bendis’s work despite some extremely generous scores from professional reviewers. So far, I haven’t seen an adjustment by Bendis in his style but it will be interesting to see where the bottom is.
A reader has to be up on the DC comics universe to be able to follow this story line. There were villians popping in and out along with superheros that showed up for a panel and then disappeared. Hard to keep up when that happens. Many panels showed what is obviously meant to be pregnant pauses or contemplative moments that told nothing to the reader. I like my story flow to be a bit more obvious.
