Nightcap is a beautiful little book, containing 40 recipes for super drinks to end an evening, each with an accompanying picture. I had great fun reading it, but as I read I realized that there was just one recipe in the entire book that I could produce without a very expensive trip to the liquor store - and likely one I would have to travel to - even though I have a fairly decent home bar. That one recipe is for a Brandy Alexander, something that has been on my Do-Not-Touch-One-Moment-On-The-Lips-Forever-On-The-Hips list for 40+ years. So, I resorted to two of my favorite experts. I miscellaneously chose 6 drinks from the book and asked my UK daughter whose husband has the single most extensive home bar I've ever seen and my granddaughter, front of house supervisor at a high-end London branch of a small European chain that specializes in cocktails what they thought. The six recipes I chose were -▶︎ Deja Vu All Over Again▶︎ Suppressor No. 246▶︎ Remember the Maine▶︎Amari-O Brothers▶︎ Falling Leaves #7▶︎ Johnnie's Smoked ChocolateUK Daughter thought all of the recipes sounded interesting and she was pretty sure she had the ingredients for four of them without a trip to the liquor store. Since she was entertaining that evening she promised to try them out. Sadly, the next morning she informed me that she had the wrong sort of vermouth. Since I had stipulated "no trip to the liquor store" none of the drinks made the cut.My Granddaughter had a different take on things. She pointed out that while amaro was cheap in Italy and somewhat reasonable in the UK, that was not the case in the US. From a commercial bar point of view, she would be reluctant to stock two different specific brands as the 6 recipes called for. She also had reservations about Falling Leaves, which calls for smoking cinnamon. Her comment: "If this drink caught on the entire establishment would reek of burning cinnamon."▶︎ Grandma's $0.02 - If cutting edge cocktails are your thing, then this might be the book for you, but most might find experimentation to require a fairly substantial investment in booze and accompaniments you do not normally keep stocked. Your call.
Deciding to take on a new cocktail should rest in its clear description.I would have been happier with this cute little book of cocktails if the author had introduced me to the flavors of all these expensive liquors..... And I wish she had been able to effectively and adequately describe these drinks. As it stands, these drinks are quite expensive to produce without having a clue as to their taste. And, I would have liked more pictures of the drinks, too.So, answering this question: "Do you dare?" is really going to decide whether you buy this book or not....Take note: You will spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on hard-to-find liquors, and you will need more than a bar cart to store them all. I guess I could say, "take warning". Why? Because I've been burned before: Bought over a hundred dollars worth of booze to recreate a few drinks that "looked good". But when we actually tried them, we did not like the flavors. Those bottles sat around forever...... Reminiscing on that experience, I realized that the flavors of those drink recipes were not adequately described. And shallow descriptions--with words that really had no concrete meaning, only abstract suggestions--did not tell the true story. The author does not offer substitutes, either. And there is not a picture of each drink. The drinks do sound interesting, and the pictures that are included do look appealing. I've looked for some of the specialty liquors and can't find them locally, nor within a hundred miles. I would have to order them.I've been able to make a few with what I've got on hand. (And I think I have a fairly large shelf of booze.) There is the Martinez, (with sweet vermouth, gin, maraschino liqueur and bitters,) and it was not bad. And a Flapjack Old Fashioned, (with aged rum, sweet vermouth, maple syrup and bitters, floating a star anise), that I liked.
This is a cool little book. I’ll start off by giving you the chapter titles, because they really do let you know what to expect from the book: Chapter 1- To Send You Off to Sleep, Chapter 2- To Keep the Conversation Going, Chapter 3- To Aid Digestion, Chapter 4- To Sweeten the Deal, and Chapter 5- One More For the Road.1 Pleasant Evening – p 40. Grapefruit juice, crème de cassis, peach bitters, champagne, and grapefruit peel. Great refreshing champagne cocktail with licorice notes in the background.2) Brandy Alexander – p 111. Brandy, crème de cacoa, heavy cream, and a dusting of nutmeg or chocolate.3) Chocolate Negroni – p 95. Gin, sweet vermouth, Campari, crème de cacao, chocolate bitters, orange, and chocolate. I LOVE this drink. It’s very chocolate covered oranges with really interesting background players. The flavors are unusual and amazing. It calls for dark crème de cacao, and I only have light, so my drink is red. Yours will be a lovely chocolate color. The garnish options were an orange slice or chocolate shavings. I don’t pass up excuses to shave chocolate.4) Stinger – p 100. Cognac, crème de menthe, absinthe, and lemon peel.5) Johnnie’s Smoked Chocolate – p 109. Scotch, mezcal, crème de cacoa, and vanilla extract. Some others I have flagged to try: Suppressor No. 246 – p 36 * Sable – p 49 * Coperta Da Sci – p 53* Going Out West – p 55 * The Nineteenth Century – p 57 * Martinez – p 67 * Flapjack Old-Fashioned – p 69 * Falling Leaves #7 – p 85 * The Best Ever Amaretto Sour – p 92 * Fernet Flip – p 98 **I received a copy to explore and share my thoughts.
