Opposites attract and then what do you do? Sail across the Pacific Ocean in a dilapidated 32-foot boat dubbed the Amazing Grace, of course. Naturally, you are terrified, but love for an adventurer pulls you forward and you risk life and limb for what? For him. Now, don’t get me wrong this is a true love story and I enjoyed the vicarious thrills of being onboard during the good and bad times with Torre and Ivan. However, I wanted to learn more about the stunning scenery of the places visited on the journey. The idyllic islands in the Marquesas, Tonga and the Cooks are all on my radar. Torre never got further than the sandy shores of these islands to explore hikes to waterfalls and such, or she did not find them share Nor, did she impart the history of the Islands which as a travel writer myself, I want to know. But, this is not a travelogue, it is a very personal memoir. Torre says that once visual impact of paradisiacal lagoons was over, she saw them as good places to be lonely. It seemed to me she never did connect with nature, although she says that is what she got from the journey. She was always yearning for the internet cafes and conversation with others. None, the less, she did brave discomfort, the big blue and many hardships to be with her lover. The writing is clever, catchy, entertaining and draws the reader forward. I tend to agree with Ivan who wants to escape society, unplug from technology and to flow freely through life. He asks her “Why leave home if you are going to take it all with you?†Love kept these polar opposites in the same tiny boat for two years.
I Loved Reading this Book! The main character, Torre, tells her story, a true story about meeting the love of her life at a bar one night and then moving forward with the romance. Her Latin lover has a grand plan to sail the world and now he wants to include Torre in his plans. She tells of the adventure and you get to go along for the ride. You might think it is a love story, but ultimately the book is about the adventure. It includes many glorious days of spotting the whales, dolphins, and seeing the amazing sunsets. However equally captivating is the encounters with dangerous life threatening situations on the high seas. Also there are unique encounters with the people they meet living on their boats and on the islands they visit. You won't want her story to end! I read the book slower and reread some as I got toward the end just to make it last a little longer!
I chose this book because with every new sailing season I begin to feel the fear of sailing again. Intellectually I know that fear is all in my head and that with some good deep breaths, I may very well be able to dissipate the feelings that I could die in storm as sea, break an arm caused by a 20-foot wave, or fall overboard. Torre DeRoche's fears were much like my own, yet she persevered and broke through her fears by motivating herself to learn about sailing and all the functions of the sailboat. And she met an amazing young man who she could sail with, learn with, grow with, and with whom she genuinely loved. Her humor is continuous throughout and it was so helpful to me to know that with humor many circumstances aboard a boat can become less unnerving than they may appear. I liked that caution was taken along Torre's journey and I learned that stopping to smell the roses is ever so important. Torre gets to the heart of the matter in terms of family and friends--how very important those people are in our lives and how being out in the ocean alone with one other person can teach you what's important in life. So when we challenge ourselves we renew who we are and appreciate life even more. Thank you, Torre, for those important life lessons.
Torre, your story was certainly one worth writing. The book was recommended to a very adventurous woman friend, so my husband decided to try it too. He could not get past your invasion of a stranger’s wallet, after finding yourself in the bed of a stranger. His loss was my gain, and really the perspective of a woman struck cords for me. Owning a 36 ft. Columbia names Sorrento, I could relate to your adventures, enjoying your great sense of humor. And you are lucky to have such a dynamic mate. All the best as you multiply life by the power of two! Fear is a wall YOU know how to walk through!
Talk about a fish out of water! "Love with a Chance of Drowning" reads like a conversation with a smart and funny friend, retelling the story of a few years of her life when she went sailing around the world (after being deathly afraid of the ocean) with a dude whom it seems only safe harbor is the ocean (think "Brandy, you're a fine girl" if you're old enough to remember 1972). A rollicing read told with wit, humor and pathos (not sure what pathos are, just sounded good). I look forward to her follow up "The Worrier's Guide to the End of the World: Love, Loss, and Other Catastrophes--through Italy, India, and Beyond".
I can't even explain how wonderful my experience was reading this book. I felt as if I was there with Torre through all of the steps she took in this wonderfully unique experience she lived. She's so human, so personable, so easy to relate to. Her writing makes you go through a wave of emotions while everything is tied together perfectly in word play. I'm a writer myself, but it has been years since I have been able to get past reading the first few pages of a book, because, in this electronic age we live in, I believe ADD/ADHD is part of almost everyone's reality, with tabs and tabs of information that certainly mess with our focusing abilities. Torre was able to hold me down, and had me anxious to get back to the book when I wasn't reading it. In the end... Well, I won't ruin it, because this is definitely a must-read. This is a book that both adventurers and stable individuals will find a place in; it speaks human.I have been wanting to travel the world so badly, but there are things in my way, and reading Love With a Chance of Drowning was a trip in its own that took me to a wonderful place. Thank you, Torre!
